What Is a 401(k) Employer Match?

A 401(k) employer match is money your employer adds to your retirement account, tied to how much of your own paycheck you contribute.

A common match formula is 50% of your contribution up to 6% of your salary, meaning your employer adds 3% of your pay if you contribute at least 6%. Formulas vary widely by employer.

If you contribute less than the amount needed to capture the full match, you are leaving part of your compensation on the table. It does not show up as a smaller paycheck. It just never gets added at all.

The match itself is separate from the IRS contribution limits on your own contributions, so capturing the full match does not use up your personal contribution room.
